HISTORY
Beech Hill Farm and Bison Ranch is located in the Lakes Region of Maine in North Waterford, about 45 miles northwest of Portland. The farm has been in the Hersey family for four generations - first as a dairy farm and later as the summer vacation home. In the mid 1990s Beech Hill Farm became a bison ranch owned and operated by Paul & Marcia Hersey who recently sold the farm and business to us, Paul's cousin and wife, Ted and Doretta Colburn. Ted is the grandson of Charles Hersey and remembers well spending summer months working there when it was still a dairy farm.
We are excited to take over the business of raising these amazing animals and are continually awed by their majesty and beauty. Some of the bison on the farm have been ours since it became a bison ranch. We have watched and worked with Paul and Marcia over these several years and are thrilled to be able to continue the quality of care and production they began.
In keeping with their wild nature, our bison freely roam our pastureland in the foothills of the White Mountains. Bison are a significant part of our North American heritage and remind us of what can be done when people work together. The successful comeback of the bison is a tribute to the strength of these majestic creatures and efforts of sustainability.
Our goal is to continue toward the production of one of the finest quality bison herds in the East. Beech Hill Bison have rivaled those in the West by producing a National Champion Heifer calf in 2003. Also, in 2006 at the national show in Denver, a bull calf won 2nd place and a heifer calf took 6th place. Beech Hill Bison have also won awards in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and the Eastern Show in Pennsylvania!
